A bit about Bradford County
Bradford, County, Pennsylvania, in the north east part
of the state, contains 1,200 square miles. The north branch of
Susquehanna River passes through it, and receives in the north
part the Chemung River. It has also Towanda and Sugar creeks.
The surface is, to a considerable extent, mountainous, though
there is much good land, particularly in the vicinity of the
Susquehanna. Bituminous coal is found on Towanda creek. The
capital is Towanda. There were in 1840, neat cattle 34,099,
sheep 68,767, swine 23,283; wheat 154,266 bush, produced, rye
45,738, Indian corn 140,632, buckwheat 77,863, oats 220,993,
potatoes 363,412; 91 stores, capitol $328,874; 2 furnaces, 15
fulling mills, 7 woolen factories, 18 tanneries, 4 distilleries,
43 grist mills, 213 saw mills, 1 oil mill, 4 printing offices, 4
weekly newspapers. Capitol in manufacturing $331,990. 3
academies, 179 students, 190 schools, 7,948 scholars. Population
1830, 19,669; 1840, 32,769.
